Man who identifies as nonbinary wants to keep penis, have Ontario taxpayers pay for vagina

A man in Ontario, Canada, who identifies as non-binary, wants to have a vagina without losing his penis. And he believes the public health system should fund the complex surgery that supposedly gives double genitalia.

The patient, identified only as KS, is a 33-year-old man described by an endocrinologist as follows:transfeminine,“This is a term applied to men who identify as closer to the female end of the so-called gender spectrum, but do not wish to completely lose their masculinity. KS uses a female name and prefers female pronouns. In court documents, he appears to estimate that “he is about two-thirds female and about one-third male.”

In 2022, KS petitioned the Ontario Health Insurance Plan to agree to fund a surgery that would allow him to create an artificial vagina without using penile tissue. His endocrinologist supported this petition. The endocrinologist argued that for Mr. KS’s “personal interpretation of gender expression,” he should “have a vagina while still having a penis.”

This surgery is so complex that no hospital in Canada performs it.what to get national post office KS calls it a “penis-sparing vaginoplasty,” but KS will have to travel all the way to Austin, Texas, for a visit. Dr. Curtis Cranehe describes himself as “uniquely qualified to treat patients requiring extensive genitourinary reconstruction.”

Crane has previously boasted that he can perform every type of gender-related surgery imaginable. “I can’t think of a single time that I wasn’t able to meet a patient’s request for surgery,” he said in a Facebook Live session three years ago. Crane also argued that penis-sparing vaginoplasty is not necessarily “uncommon.” “I probably do about 10 a year,” he said.

Despite Mr. Crane’s confidence and self-reported experience, OHIP ruled that the specialized vaginoplasty was experimental and denied Mr. KS’ request. KS subsequently appealed this decision to the Ontario Health Services Appellate Review Board, which reversed her OHIP decision and ruled in KS’ favor.

OHIP appealed the panel’s decision to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, which heard the case in February. A judgment from the High Court is expected in the coming months.

Mr KS and his lawyers argued that denying him the opportunity for both sexes would be “null and void” because he considers himself literally a “mix” of both genders. They also claim that such denial is a form of conversion therapy, which is prohibited in Canada.

Dr. Crane took the lawyers’ argument a step further, arguing that “having a patient harvest an organ that they enjoy is a form of assault.”

But Canadian Gender Report, an organization concerned about the increasing medicalization of children related to gender, believes cases like KS’s show how “insane” the situation is. ing. “Our public health care system is at breaking point and we need to really focus on medically necessary treatments,” said Pamela Buffon, founder of CGR.

“Is this kind of surgery medical?” Buffone continued. “Surgeries do not improve the patient’s physical health and are likely to cause complications, the need for corrective surgery and further demands on the health care system.”

Although this incident may seem strange, it is not entirely unprecedented. Last year, OHIP approved funding for Nathaniel Le May, a 41-year-old woman who identifies as male, to undergo surgery to create a penis without damaging her vagina and uterus. She argued that the forced destruction of biological reproductive organs to obtain synthetic reproductive organs was akin to forced sterilization.

Mr. Le May implied that OHIP had engaged in some form of discrimination in denying Mr. KS’s claims. “Why is it considered experimental for her to have a vagina and penis, but not for me?” Le May said. “Why does OHIP admit that it’s a covered service for me, but then continue to fight because it’s not for her? OHIP is inconsistent.”

“My result is the same as KS’s. We will both have penises and vaginas.”

KS declined the National Post’s request for comment.
