Armed Man Arrested Near U.S. Capitol
On Monday, an armed individual was taken into custody as he approached security barricades outside the U.S. Capitol. This incident prompted law enforcement to temporarily close off parts of the area while they investigated his intentions for arriving at this highly secured location.
The U.S. Capitol Police reported that officers apprehended the man at the northern barricade after discovering he had a firearm, which is strictly prohibited on Capitol grounds. Consequently, officials initiated a lockdown as they began processing the scene.
“Investigators are currently working to understand more about the suspect and the reasons behind his visit to the U.S. Capitol,” stated the Capitol Police in a release.
Authorities have yet to disclose the suspect’s identity or any charges against him.
Meanwhile, police remained on-site in the afternoon, visibly removing items from a Ford Bronco parked in a way that blocked the barricade. From a distance, it looked like they were taking out water bottles and personal belongings.
Fox News captured video footage showing the suspect’s Bronco being towed away after his arrest. The vehicle, which had Florida license plates, was taken by authorities while they continued to gather evidence and assess the situation.
In a noteworthy detail, a dog left inside the car was safely rescued and transported by an SPCA vehicle.
The northern barricade remained closed as investigations proceeded.
