Karma Strikes in Maryland Truck Theft Case

In a striking twist of events, Maryland State Police uncovered that the person who reported a truck stolen was simultaneously attempting a burglary. Jalen Godard, 29, from Odenton, called the authorities around 5:44 a.m. on Thursday to report his truck missing.

Among the details shared, Godard told officers, “Hey, someone stole my truck,” captured on police body camera footage. When asked if he left it parked somewhere, he mentioned being at McDonald’s at the time.

Oddly enough, officers had just received a theft report involving a Verizon store not far from where Godard claimed his truck was stolen. This prompted further investigation, and evidence soon linked him to the Verizon case. They found blood on a broken window at the scene, and soon after, they noted bloodstains on Godard’s hands.

During the encounter, the officer asked to see Godard’s hands, and upon examining them, remarked, “Okay, put your hands behind your back.” Godard maintained he wasn’t involved in the robbery, even as a video surfaced showing someone who looked strikingly similar to him inside the store.

As the officer remarked on the curious timing of the truck theft while Godard was in the act of burglary, Godard replied, “Well, I left the key in.” The officer humorously noted, “Yeah, it’s like karma there, dude!”

Ultimately, Godard was charged with robbery, theft, and criminal damage to property. Police playfully concluded their statement with a rhetorical question: “Wouldn’t you hate it if your car was stolen while you were stealing?” They commended Officer Buchanan for connecting the dots in these unusual circumstances, saying, “Karma, for sure.”
