A blue state issued a commercial truck driver's license to a Haitian undocumented immigrant — and now a good man has lost his life.

Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahila Jr. tragically lost his life in an incident involving an illegal alien. At 44 years old, Pahila was a Schuylkill County native who joined the Pennsylvania State Police in 2007. On July 1, while inspecting a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 near Ashland, he was struck by another tractor-trailer that veered into his lane.

The collision caused the officer’s cruiser to be pushed into the vehicle he was inspecting, resulting in an explosion and a fire. Firefighters reported finding Pahila’s body trapped beneath the bumper of the second tractor-trailer, as noted by the Pottsville Republican-Herald. Construction workers at the scene rushed to help, pulling him from the burning wreckage.

Pahila was recently caring for his mother, who had been suffering from cancer, and she sadly passed away just 90 minutes after he was taken to the hospital. The driver of the truck that struck him, Michael Bonn, aged 33, also required treatment for his injuries.

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security later confirmed that Bonn is an illegal immigrant from Haiti, having entered the U.S. via Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in July 2024 under a humanitarian parole program initiated by the Biden administration.

Bonn had previously been denied temporary protected status in October 2024. In June 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ended his parole, but he has remained in the country illegally ever since, as reported by the Boston Herald. Bonn has faced multiple charges in the past, including felony vehicular homicide and aggravated assault, and he is currently being held in the Schuylkill County Jail with an upcoming court appearance scheduled for July 16. As of now, no attorney has been listed for him.

In a statement, the Pennsylvania Police Officers Association pointed out that Bonn was illegal at the time of the tragedy, stating, “This is a right or wrong issue. Officer Pahila is a hero, and his family, fellow officers, and the public deserve answers.” The association raised concerns about how Bonn, despite being in the U.S. illegally, was able to obtain a commercial driver’s license in Massachusetts.

Reports indicate that Bonn received a no-domicile commercial driver’s license in March 2025. When he applied for renewal in February, it was approved, despite the Massachusetts State Police’s role in ensuring the legality of such drivers.

Governor Josh Shapiro called for thoughts and prayers for Pahila’s family, emphasizing the loss felt by his friends, neighbors, and the entire Pennsylvania State Police community.
