Iran is facing significant internal turmoil as government officials intensify their security crackdown in the wake of a recent 12-day conflict that led to substantial damage to three key nuclear facilities. Reports indicate a wave of mass arrests and executions within the country.
The Iranian government has initiated these crackdowns following an airstrike by Israel on June 13. This has manifested in broad arrests and a heavy police presence on the streets, as noted by various activists and officials.
These stringent actions have dimmed hopes for an uprising not just against external foes like Israel, but also against the current regime. Notably, there haven’t been any large-scale protests reported so far, although some individuals have expressed their dissatisfaction with the policies of the Islamic Republic.
According to a leaked report, the government’s strategy appears to involve imposing severe penalties to instill fear among the populace. An advisor specializing in Iranian affairs suggested that the recent Israeli operations have exposed the Iranian regime as weaker than it has previously seemed.
Recent reports from human rights organizations indicate that at least 705 individuals have been detained on political or security-related charges following these events. This figure includes around 700 people who are believed to have connections with Israel, according to state media.
Additionally, there have been claims of executions, with three individuals reportedly executed for being accused spies for Mossad. These individuals allegedly smuggled in equipment disguised as alcohol, purportedly intended for assassinations.
Nonprofit organizations working in Iran have raised alarms about death row inmates facing execution on similar charges. Reports suggest that at least nine executions have occurred this year alone related to espionage accusations against Israel.
