Marco Rubio Compares Trump Trial to ‘Sham Trial” Soviet Union Used

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) likened Trump’s business records trial to the “sham trials” conducted by the former Soviet Union against “political opponents.”

Rubio’s comments came hours after Judge Juan Marchan, who is overseeing the trial of former President Donald Trump, gave instructions to the jury before the verdict began. There have been differing reports about what Judge Marchan said in his instructions.

CNN reported that Judge Marchan told the jury that they “must be unanimous in finding Mr. Trump guilty of each charge, whether he committed a crime personally, conspired with others, or both.”

Others, for example John RobertsCo-anchor of America Report George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley of Fox News report “There is no need for agreement on what happened. There can be disagreement on what was a crime among the three options, so even if it’s 4-4-4, he’s going to treat it as unanimous,” Marchand said.

“The judge in Trump’s New York City trial told jurors that they don’t have to unanimously agree on which crimes were committed, but they all have to pick at least one,” Rubio said. I have written In X’s post, he wrote, “And some of the crimes they can pick out Trump hasn’t even been charged with!!! This is just like the show trials held against political opponents of the former Soviet regime.”

In the mid-to-late 1930s, during the Soviet Union’s rule by dictator Joseph Stalin, “show trials” – a term used to describe the “Great Purge” – were “clearly orchestrated events” in which those accused “admitted to being traitors and spies.” according to From History.com.

“Historians later learned that the defendants agreed to these coerced confessions only after being interrogated, threatened and tortured,” the media added.

Several other members of the Republican Party, including entrepreneur and former GOP 2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), have described the Trump trial as a “sham.”

On May 14, Ramaswami held a press conference outside Trump’s business records trial with Governor Doug Burgum (R-ND), Rep. Byron Donald (R-FL), and Rep. Corey Mills (R-FL).

“This is a sham. This is not the United States of America. This is a third-rate banana republic,” Ramaswami said in his speech. “If this had happened in any other country, we would have laughed at them as fake democracies.”

Ramaswamy Added He said he was “embarrassed as an American citizen” by what was happening in the trial.
