Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) on Sunday used history to undermine a popular liberal talking point that has been used to stomp fears about President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
For nearly a decade, Democrats and media activists have argued that Trump is a fascist and authoritarian who, if elected president, would unconstitutionally seize dictatorial levels of power and bring an end to American democracy.
“He’ll be too busy trying to undo all the damage from this disastrous presidency.”
On CNN’s “State of the Union,” host Dana Bash asked Rubio if he felt “comfortable” suggesting that the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity gives the president power beyond what is provided by the Constitution, to which Rubio responded by explaining the context of the Supreme Court’s decision: It was only necessary when the Department of Justice was weaponized to attack Trump.
Following the senator’s comments, Bash leapt to Biden’s defense.
“Donald Trump said he was going to go after Joe Biden, he was going to go after the Biden family. I’ve never heard Joe Biden say that,” Bash argued.
“Donald Trump said that — no, he didn’t,” Rubio countered. “I was watching the debate … and he was asked, and he said, ‘My revenge is to make America great again, to restore it — to make America great again.’ … He has said repeatedly that his revenge is to make America great again, to restore everything. [of the Biden administration’s] It’s bad public policy.”
Rubio then pointed to historical facts that undermine claims that Trump would become a fascist dictator.
“By the way, he was president for four years. He didn’t go after Hillary Clinton. He didn’t go after Joe Biden. He didn’t go after Barack Obama. He didn’t go after any of their consultants,” Rubio explained.
“We didn’t see what we’re seeing now under him,” he added.
But Bash ignored that fact, instead asking Rubio to promise that Trump “won’t attack any Democrat, any political opponent.”
“Yes, he was president before, but he didn’t do that then, and he’s already said he won’t do that,” Rubio responded. “He’ll be too busy trying to undo all the damage from this disastrous presidency.”
At the start of the interview, Rubio noted that during Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2021, “not a single prominent Democrat was hounded, persecuted or prosecuted.”
