Marcus Mumford and Carey Mulligan: From Childhood Friends to Private Couple
Before becoming Hollywood’s more reclusive couple, Marcus Mumford and Carey Mulligan were just two kids who met at a Bible camp. In a recent podcast appearance, Mumford shared how their childhood friendship transformed into romance years later, after they reconnected as adults.
The two first crossed paths at a church Bible camp when Mumford was 10 and Mulligan was 12. They started off as pen pals, which, if I’m honest, is kind of sweet. He reminisced that even back then, they kept in touch.
“She still has the diary from the day I met her,” he noted. His cousin, who was a bit older, scored a 8.5 out of 10. But Mumford? He got a 9, even though, by his own admission, he wasn’t exactly what you’d call “boyfriend material” back then.
This initial encounter didn’t spark an instant romance. It took years for it to unfold. They only reconnected after finding each other on Facebook in their twenties. Following that, Mulligan purchased tickets to a Laura Marling concert where Mumford & Sons were also performing. It seems a little fate intertwined there, right?
This led to a note left by Mulligan with her email address for Mumford’s tour manager, and well, the rest is history. After dating for about five months, Mumford proposed. They tied the knot on April 21, 2012, in Somerset, surrounded by their family and friends. Now they have three children—a son and two daughters.
Interestingly enough, the couple prefers to keep their marriage private. Mulligan commented that Marcus is the “only thing” in her life she can keep completely away from the public eye, and they’ve made their relationship a top priority over the years.
Mumford reflected in a 2022 interview, saying, “We said, ‘There’s a lot to win. Let’s make it our great job. Everything else will come from that, right?'” It’s kind of refreshing to see a couple focus on nurturing their relationship, especially in the public eye.
Mulligan is a celebrated actress known for her performances in “An Education,” “Drive,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Promising Young Woman,” and most recently, “Maestro,” for which she received her third Oscar nomination. Mumford, on the other hand, is the lead singer and guitarist of Mumford & Sons, the folk-rock band that gained fame during the early 2010s folk revival.
