Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed her discontent on Monday regarding President Trump’s decision to host Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Shalah at the White House, suggesting that he should concentrate more on domestic matters like health care.
In a post on X, Greene emphasized the need for the president to focus on formulating a Republican strategy to tackle increasing health care costs rather than engaging with foreign leaders.
“I really wish there were non-stop meetings at the WH about domestic policy, not foreign policy or foreign leaders,” she mentioned in her post.
She went on to advocate for involving health insurance executives in discussions to create a Republican solution aimed at alleviating the financial burden of Obamacare and ACA tax credits.
Despite being a supporter of Trump, Greene has recently diverged from her party on several significant topics, particularly health care.
As a Republican from Georgia, Greene has drawn attention by criticizing her party for not being adequately prepared for the anticipated expiration of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, which she warns could negatively impact many citizens, including their adult children.
Moreover, Greene took issue with certain elements of the Trump administration’s foreign policy and has urged the president and fellow Republicans to concentrate on issues she believes are paramount for Americans.
Al-Shalah’s visit to the White House occurred shortly before noon ET, marking the first time a Syrian head of state has visited. This follows Trump’s recent decision to lift al-Shalah’s terrorist designation.
While the president has called for Congress to remove all sanctions on Syria, some Republicans are against a complete repeal and are advocating for measures to ensure al-Shalah’s commitment to responsible governance.
Greene raised concerns about the “persecution” of Christians in Syria, which she claims has persisted under the new leadership since December.
In her post on X, she remarked, “Syria’s new leader, a former Al Qaeda terrorist wanted by our government, is meeting with President Trump at the White House today to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps.” She further highlighted that many Christians and minorities suffered violence before and after the sanctions were lifted. “Syria is the oldest stronghold of Christianity outside of Israel. The Apostle Paul met Jesus on his way to Damascus. We pray for an end to persecution, not only in Syria but throughout the world.”
The White House has not provided any comments in response to these issues.
