Mark Cuban’s Interest in the Mavericks
Mark Cuban has expressed interest in potentially reacquiring the Dallas Mavericks.
The billionaire sold a 73% stake in the team to the Adelson family for $3.5 billion in December 2023, after owning it for 23 years. This sale was followed by a decline in the franchise’s performance, notably marked by a controversial trade of superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February 2025.
Currently, the Mavericks, featuring NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, have missed the playoffs for the last two seasons, holding a combined record of 65-99. This follows their run to the NBA Finals in the 2023-24 season.
Injuries to veteran players like Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving have greatly impacted the team.
The 67-year-old Cuban was openly critical of the Doncic trade. He stated that he had been approached by a number of individuals unhappy with the direction of the Mavericks. In a conversation, he indicated he would be interested in helping to regain control if the Adelson family considered selling the franchise. However, he didn’t think that was a likely scenario.
“If I could do it again, I would, but it’s not just a game anymore,” he remarked. Cuban, who still holds 27% of the team, explained that he would consider donating his stock to facilitate a sale, but he believed the Adelsons had no intention of selling.
Cuban described his feelings about the sale as complicated. He admitted, “I don’t regret selling. I regret who I sold it to. I made a lot of mistakes along the way. I’ll leave it at that.”
Furthermore, the situation may evolve in the future since the Adelson family holds the option to purchase another 20% of the Mavericks from Cuban within four years of their ownership.
