Mark Halperin Challenges Two Ideas About Jake Tapper’s Book on Biden’s Decline

On Tuesday, political analyst Mark Halperin challenged the notion that CNN anchor Jake Tapper obscured information regarding former President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline prior to a debate in June. Halperin referenced a promotional video from Penguin Press for Tapper’s impending book, *Original Sin*, which aired on May 5. The video featured Tapper questioning Biden’s age, raising doubts about his mental sharpness. However, Halperin critiqued this portrayal, suggesting that it doesn’t convincingly indicate concern over Biden’s condition based on his public performances.

Halperin pointed out that while Tapper’s segment seemed to touch on Biden’s cognitive state, it lacked the depth expected from serious journalism. “The publisher put together what I think is an interesting clip, but it doesn’t show the urgency necessary,” Halperin noted. He emphasized that true inquiry into such a significant issue would require a more rigorous approach during Biden’s presidency and would not simply accept official explanations without skepticism.

Halperin went further by showing a longer clip of Tapper’s interview with Biden from October 2022. In that interview, the conversation revolved around a birthday greeting for the president and a poll reflecting dissatisfaction among Democrats, but did not directly address concerns about Biden’s mental fitness. “He asked about the poll, but it wasn’t framed in terms of cognitive decline,” Halperin remarked, underscoring a lack of direct questioning on a crucial topic.

He then played additional clips from interviews featuring White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Biden’s former communications director, Kate Bedingfield. In these, Jean-Pierre acknowledged the challenge of keeping up with Biden and noted the public’s worry about his age. Halperin criticized the lack of tough questioning, arguing that serious inquiries into potential cover-ups should not be treated so lightly.

Furthermore, Halperin pointed out a moment when Biden mistakenly referenced a deceased congresswoman, showcasing a lapse in memory he described as significant. He concluded that Biden’s cognitive challenges were evident, adding, “It’s perplexing how this was downplayed night after night. Mental decline manifests in various ways, and we’ve watched it unfold on television since 2020.”
