Markwayne Mullin Highlights Economic Advantages of a Secure Border

Border Security Equals Economic Benefits, Says DHS Secretary

During a policy event with Breitbart News, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin highlighted how a secure border can bolster the economy, arguing that national security ultimately leads to increased business opportunities within the United States.

Mullin addressed a common argument from the left about the necessity of mass migration for economic growth, especially considering the negative net migration trends currently observed in the U.S.

“There are two key points regarding mass migration that challenge that idea,” Mullin stated, discussing how “national security fosters business because it ensures stability above all.”

He elaborated, saying, “When businesses have faith in the government, they feel secure operating in the area. They don’t worry about theft, they can trust that their employees will be safe commuting, and that those workers are likely to pass drug tests and show up on time.” Mullin emphasized that stability in law enforcement and security is crucial.

He further asserted that without border security, true national security is unattainable, as it’s impossible to know who is within the country when border policies are ineffective or lax, as was the case during the Biden administration.

This lack of security is a significant concern, he explained.

Additionally, Mullin noted that mass migration drives up housing costs, complicating matters for average Americans financially.

“After implementing immigration enforcement in certain areas, we find that the average rent decreases by about six percent,” he shared. “If workers can’t afford to live near their workplaces due to rising prices, it becomes unfeasible for employers or manufacturers to attract staff.”

He concluded that national security and affordability must go hand in hand, clarifying that their stance isn’t anti-immigration.

“We’re not against immigration. Rather, we believe it’s essential to adhere to the laws of our nation. We intend to enforce these laws, so if you follow the correct procedures to enter and embrace the essence of America—its opportunities and freedoms—then we welcome you. However, we cannot allow individuals to break laws or bring problematic agendas from their countries into the U.S.,” he stressed.

Mullin continued, “Whether it takes 18 months or 18 years, adherence to the law is non-negotiable. If you skip ahead in line out of impatience, our duty is to find you and send you back, and we will do that,” reiterating that they are not fundamentally against immigration.

“We are a nation governed by laws, and without enforcement, we risk blurring the lines that distinguish a developed nation from a developing one, particularly in instances of criminal behavior,” he warned. He mentioned several cities experiencing significant crime issues, including Portland, Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles.

“These cities should be thriving. Have you seen New York recently? It looks pretty neglected—like a trash pit. That’s what happens in sanctuary cities; they draw in criminal activities, which further diminishes the nation’s morale,” he added.
