Markwayne Mullin: ICE Actions Contribute to Steady Rents and Home Values

Immigration Enforcement and Its Effects on Housing Market

During an event on Tuesday in Washington, DC, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin shared insights with Breitbart News. He emphasized that enforcing immigration laws is playing a role in stabilizing rents and home prices for Americans.

Mullin mentioned that actions related to immigration enforcement are partially responsible for the stabilization trend in housing prices across the country. This aligns with a strategy that the Trump administration has promoted as part of their message to voters leading up to the midterm elections.

He pointed out, “When you allow that many people to come in, it puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the housing prices. So when we go into areas and do immigration enforcement, we see the average rent drop by about six percent. You’ve got to have national security and affordability at the same time.”

According to a report from Business Insider, home prices in various cities across states like Texas, Florida, Minnesota, Oregon, and Colorado are declining. This trend is attributed to an increase in housing inventory and interest rates remaining above seven percent.

A report from the Brookings Institution, which is often regarded as left-leaning, acknowledged that the influx of millions of migrants under President Joe Biden led to a rise in rents by approximately 1.4 to 1.6 percent. It also noted a decrease in average wages by about 1.5 percent.

This finding was part of a broader series of studies suggesting that mass migration under Biden had a generally negative effect on American workers, their salaries, and housing prices.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas also noted in June that mass immigration has contributed to rising housing prices from early 2021 to early 2024, indicating that more people in the U.S. has resulted in increased costs.

A previous investigation by Housing and Urban Development revealed that the arrival of millions of migrants under Biden’s policies has led to higher costs for low-income Americans who do not receive public assistance.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has repeatedly indicated that “mass unfettered immigration pushed up rents, especially for working Americans” during Biden’s presidency.
