Maryland Governor Points Finger at Trump for Large Sewage Leak Originating in His State

Sewage Spill in Potomac River Blamed on Trump by Maryland Governor

Maryland’s Democratic Governor Wes Moore has accused President Donald Trump of contributing to harmful bacteria levels resulting from a significant sewage spill in the Potomac River. The spill, which occurred on January 19, released millions of gallons of sewage into the waterway.

In response to the situation, President Trump ordered federal assistance for cleanup efforts to safeguard the river. However, he placed the blame on Governor Moore’s “incompetent leadership,” prompting a spokesperson for Moore to assert that the Trump administration has failed to adequately protect Maryland residents.

“The president’s facts are incorrect,” stated Ammar Moussa, Moore’s press secretary. “The federal government has been responsible for the Potomac Interceptor, which caused this sewage leak, for decades. Over the past month, the Trump administration has shown inaction, avoiding responsibility and endangering public health—especially the health of the president himself. He notably declined to attend an important Congressional hearing on the cleanup last Friday. It seems they missed the memo about their responsibilities.”

On social media, Moore’s office reacted to Trump’s criticism regarding the sewage situation. The source of the leak is under the jurisdiction of D.C.

Trump, via Truth Social, stated his administration would ensure all necessary measures would be taken to manage the cleanup and protect the river. Meanwhile, White House officials indicated that Maryland has been slow to work with federal agencies regarding necessary updates to address the burst water pipes.

“I am directing federal authorities to promptly implement necessary measures to safeguard the Potomac River and essential resources in Washington, D.C.,” Trump emphasized. “We cannot let incompetent local leaders turn this central river into a disaster area.”

Furthermore, Trump noted that FEMA, even after budget cuts to the Department of Homeland Security, would be instrumental in coordinating the response to the spill, which occurred when a 72-inch sewer pipe collapsed.

Water testing by the Potomac Riverkeeper Network revealed bacteria levels at Fletchers Cove in D.C. to be 60 times higher than what is deemed safe for human contact. Emergency repairs are projected to take an additional four to six weeks.

Governor Moore has often been mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election and has had ongoing disputes with Trump during his presidency. He has argued that crime rates in Baltimore have reached new lows and has opposed Trump’s suggestion to send in the National Guard.

Additionally, Trump excluded both Moore and Colorado’s Democratic Governor Jared Polis from a recent dinner at the White House, stating they were “not worth being there.”

The White House has not yet provided a comment regarding these developments.
