Activist Critiques American Left’s Silence on Iranian Protests
Masih Alinejad, an Iranian-American activist, has expressed concern that the American left seems to have abandoned Iranian protesters. This comes against the backdrop of reports indicating thousands of deaths amid a comprehensive communications blackout imposed by the regime.
“It’s not an accident that leftists and liberals in America and Europe are quiet. This is ideological silence,” Alinejad stated during a segment on a morning show.
Alinejad, who has faced threats from the Iranian regime due to her activism, pointed out the stark contrast in the reactions of some Western activists and celebrities. While many have passionately supported the cause of Palestinian liberation, they seem to remain silent as Iranians face violence on their streets. “It would lay bare their hypocrisy,” she noted.
She elaborated, “This will expose how they align themselves with our murderers and Islamist terrorists.”
The protests in Iran represent the largest anti-government movements in years. Human rights organizations report that, as security forces crack down on demonstrators, the death toll might even exceed 3,000. Alinejad has accused various Western figures of tacitly bolstering the regime, suggesting they portray calls for regime change as a foreign conspiracy orchestrated by Israel and former President Trump.
“By staying quiet, you play into the hands of the Islamic Republic, and you are putting our lives in jeopardy,” she warned.
The Iranian government has imposed severe restrictions, eliminating public internet access, which has left the populace almost completely disconnected during an already intense time of protest. The anger among demonstrators is particularly fueled by the crumbling economy and the plummeting value of the currency.
“I’m unsure about my family’s wellbeing,” Alinejad shared. “People lack mobile phones and internet access.”
She cautioned that those choosing silence in the face of the Iranian struggle may find themselves judged by history.
On another note, President Trump recently declared that nations that maintain trade relationships with Iran will face a hefty 25% tariff on all trade with the United States. He has also condemned the Iranian regime’s handling of protests, suggesting that Iran is “beginning to cross” critical lines and that the U.S. is contemplating “very strong options.”
