Mass Migration Drives Up Rents, Welfare Rolls, Car Crashes

The arrival of thousands of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, led to an increase in welfare recipients, higher housing costs for local residents, and a surge in car accidents.

A combination of the federal government's Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' parole pipeline, and record levels of illegal immigration has added between 10,000 and 20,000 Haitian immigrants to Springfield's residential population.

Extensive Report According to Reuters, this wave of mass immigration to Springfield has led to higher home prices and rents for local residents, more car accidents, and increased welfare use.

“After half a century of population decline, data shows a rapid recovery is having a noticeable impact on Springfield,” Reuters reports.

Enrollment in Medicaid and federal food assistance and welfare programs has soared. Rent costs and car accidents have also risen. That includes last year when a Haitian man without a U.S. driver's license crashed into a school bus, killing 11-year-old Aiden Clark and injuring 26 other children. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), former President Donald Trump's running mate, has long warned about the impact mass immigration would have on Americans' housing costs.

In July, Vance raised the issue with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, pointing out the problems facing Springfield. In response to Vance's comments, Powell appeared to acknowledge that mass immigration tends to have a negative impact on housing costs.

Vance asked Powell.

What do you think about that relationship, especially given that housing has been a big driver of inflation over the last few years? What role do you think illegal immigration plays in driving up home prices? Of course, home prices are a major driver of inflation for Americans.

“There are certainly places where we're seeing an influx of new people into the country, and there are certainly places where that's going to add to an already tight housing market,” Powell said.
