Massie promises that Trump’s threats to challenge him in the primaries will have serious consequences.

Massie vows Trump's threats to primary him will 'backfire tremendously'

Political Tensions Surround Rep. Thomas Massey

Representative Thomas Massey from Kentucky expressed concerns that ongoing threats to President Trump’s claims could significantly harm the Republican Party, possibly jeopardizing their House majority by mid-2026.

“They’ve already spent $1.8 billion on my campaign in this district, which, to be honest, hasn’t seemed very effective,” Massey remarked during an interview with NBC News, indicating that he believes they’re trying to undermine him and rally support against him.

“I’m confident I’ll win. They’re mistakenly thinking that they can rally their members—not just on the issues, but emotionally—by trying to connect their hearts to their party lines,” he told NBC’s Sahil Kapoor.

Trump’s political network has initiated a focused campaign to unseat Massey, who often criticizes the administration and does not support its legislative measures.

When questioned by Kapoor about whether he thought Trump’s strategies would backfire in the next couple of years, Massey replied, “I think it will backfire significantly. They’re pouring millions into my campaign, and frankly, I believe they might lose their majority over it. Also, I believe there are Republicans who quietly align with my perspective but hesitate to support me because of primary concerns.”

Trump recently criticized Kentucky legislators, labeling some as “the worst Republican Congressman,” particularly when a critical vote is involved, referencing a statement he made on Truth Social. He also included a link to an advertisement related to Massey.

“He’s lazy, slow-moving, and completely dishonest—nothing good to say about him,” Trump added.

Massey is one of two House Republicans who opposed Trump’s major legislation and previously condemned a U.S. military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Speaker Mike Johnson remarked on Massey’s bipartisan approach in addressing sensitive issues, expressing some frustration during a Tuesday press briefing. “It seems some individuals enjoy inflicting political difficulty on their colleagues. While I’m not targeting anyone specifically, I must admit my frustration outmatches others,” Johnson stated.

He continued, “One person in particular is quite surprising to me. Honestly, I’m not sure what drives Thomas Massey or how he thinks.”
