Massive bull escapes from farm, runs onto highway causing crash

A massive 1,300-pound bull escaped from a Massachusetts farm Monday morning, crashed on the highway and then charged at officers, police said.

Workers at Matthew Farms in Raynham, Massachusetts, were loading a bull onto a truck for slaughter around 9 a.m. when the bull became enraged and ran away.

Raynham Police received a call about a “very aggressive” large black bull running around on Jennings Drive near Elm Street East. The bull ran through fences, including an electric fence, and jumped over a six-foot embankment to escape.

Before police arrived, the bull ran onto Interstate 495, striking at least three vehicles. One driver was injured and taken to a local hospital, police said.

The bull ran into the woods on Elm Street East and then into Lake Nippeniket near the Raynham Water Department building.

A 911 call led authorities in Arizona to spot the escaped reptile crossing a busy highway

Officers and farm staff found the bull swimming in the lake, and upon seeing the officers, the bull “swam quickly and aggressively toward the officers,” police said.

Officers fired their rifles but to no avail, and the bull continued to swim toward shore, police said. Officers then fired several more shots, hitting the bull in the leg and immobilizing it.

According to Raynham Police, the owner of Matthew Farm retrieved his hunting rifle and euthanized the bull.

“I want to commend our brave officers who put themselves in harm’s way to prevent a bad situation from getting any worse,” Chief LaPlante said in a statement. “A 1,300-pound bull charging at you is the last thing you ever think you’d expect to see while on the job, but our officers responded to the situation, dealt with it effectively, and prevented further injury and destruction.”
