Jason Day was one of the highlights of this week’s 88th Masters Tournament. Unfortunately, it wasn’t necessarily because of his play at Augusta National, but rather his wardrobe choices.
During Thursday’s opening round, Day wore the baggiest pants I’ve ever seen on a golf course. There was also a scene where his fans called back to MC Hammer.
His first round was cut short due to bad weather, forcing him to postpone his tee time. So he came out early Friday morning to finish the first round wearing a straight-out-1980s vest.
However, when he returned to start the second round shortly thereafter, fans noticed that his vest was gone.
After the third round, Day acknowledged his suspicions by mentioning a wardrobe change.
“They told me to take it off, I took the vest off yesterday,” Day said.
“With all due respect, you do that because everything here is for the tournament, and I understand that. I respect the competition.”
The Australian had another tough day on the Augusta course.
He shot a 4-over 76, falling into a tie for 45th place at 8-over in the tournament.
But Day wasn’t the only player posting big numbers this week. Throughout this week, high winds with gusts ranging from 15 to 45 miles per hour have caused havoc.
So much of Day’s post-round talk was about fashion choices.
Of course, golf fashion has come into its own since signing with the up-and-coming Malbon Golf brand.
Day was asked whether Augusta National had given a reason for requesting the costume change.
“I don’t know. I didn’t ask. They said, ‘Can you take it off?’ I said, “Yeah, don’t worry…it’s from Augusta National.”
If there’s one environment in the sport of golf where this isn’t surprising, it’s here.
