Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI director James Comey, was wrongfully dismissed as a Manhattan prosecutor by the Trump Department of Justice.

WASHINGTON — A federal judge ruled on Monday that Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, should be reinstated by the Trump administration after deciding that her firing from the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York was unlawful.

US District Judge Jesse Furman also mandated that the Justice Department provide Maurene with back pay.

In a critical 55-page ruling, Furman stated, “Congress granted the Attorney General power to remove Comey, but Congress set limits on that power — limits that, even Defendants concede, were violated in Comey’s case.”

The judge further emphasized that upholding Comey’s termination “would disrupt the very balance established by this Nation’s constitutional system.”

Maurene was let go in July 2025 after a notable career, which included key involvement in high-profile cases such as those against the late Jeffrey Epstein, his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

It seems likely that the administration will appeal Furman’s decision, particularly after the Supreme Court’s ruling in June that broadened the authority to dismiss federal officials at will.

Meanwhile, James Comey is facing federal charges in North Carolina for allegedly threatening to kill the president, an indictment he claims is a result of selective and retaliatory prosecution. His arraignment is set for January 2027.
