Joy Reid and Maury Povich Discuss Senate Politics
Former daytime talk show host Maury Povich recently reacted to remarks from ex-MSNBC host Joy Reid. On her podcast, Reid suggested that Senate Democrats should adhere to the rules and refrain from engaging in political maneuvering like Republicans do. Povich found this amusing.
He pointed out that if Democrats manage to regain the Senate majority after the 2026 midterm elections, they could impede President Trump’s ability to nominate another Supreme Court justice. This, he likened to Mitch McConnell blocking then-President Obama’s appointment following Justice Scalia’s passing in 2016. Reid, however, countered that Democratic politicians are fundamentally different from their Republican counterparts.
“Seriously, will Democrats really control the Senate?” Povich questioned, somewhat skeptically. He also probed a hypothetical scenario about Justice Alito’s retirement and whether Democrats would hold a confirmation hearing for a Trump nominee.
Reid, defending her position, insisted that Democrats do not operate like Republicans, maintaining that “Democrats are playing by the Marquess of Queensberry’s rules,” to which Povich could barely contain his laughter.
Povich pressed further, recalling how Senate Democrats continue to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security, even when they aren’t the majority, citing this as evidence of their political strategy. Reid argued that this stance was a result of having “compromised too many times” in the past.
In a twist, Reid asserted that while Democrats aim to follow the rules, Republicans are inclined to rewrite them. “They’re rewriting the rules,” she contended, highlighting a fundamental disagreement on political approach.
Despite their differences, Reid claimed a capability to evaluate candidates beyond partisan lines, emphasizing that her role as a journalist allows her to step outside of political affiliations.
