Mayor Adams changes his stance, defends student taken by ICE

Mayor Eric Adams expressed his support on Monday for high school students in New York City who were involved in President Trump’s deportation efforts.

The city’s legal team submitted a short brief in support of Dylan Lopez Contreras, a 20-year-old Venezuelan seeking asylum, who was detained in a Manhattan court on May 21 after attending a required immigration hearing.

Contreras’ arrest prompted protests from hundreds of students last week, which led to some criticism of Mayor Adams for not addressing serious concerns about immigrant detention.

The legal brief raised alarms that ICE’s tactics risk discouraging people from engaging with the court system, something essential to New York City’s sanctuary policies.

“This impact threatens to reach many other issues that go far beyond immigration and affect public welfare that require residents to appear in court every day,” the brief indicated.

In a statement reflecting the brief’s concerns, Adams noted that Contreras was penalized for following the legal process.

“Dylan Lopez Contreras was simply adhering to the legal procedures set for new arrivals who want to support their families,” he said.

However, the mayor seemed to shift his tone last week when he was asked if Contreras’ arrest might deter other immigrants from accessing the court system. He responded, “No, I don’t think so.”

A spokesperson from City Hall later attempted to clarify Adams’ earlier comments, suggesting that the mayor may have been misinformed.

Adams has generally shown support for many sanctuary city policies but has also recommended revising certain policies to enhance collaboration with ICE.

He has reopened the ICE office on Rikers Island, allowing local officials to work alongside the federal government on immigration enforcement in line with the views of Trump and other conservative leaders.

The immigration case concerning Contreras, which is taking place in a federal court in Pennsylvania, could potentially be positioned to benefit Adams’ Trump-aligned supporters while alleviating fears among immigrant communities in New York about possible deportation actions.

“Dylan followed all the necessary legal steps for the immigration process but was apprehended by ICE in front of his mother after attending a scheduled hearing,” said Powermal, the president of Candice Brown, a supportive activist at ROCC NYC.

“On one hand, the mayor encourages everyone to utilize public services, while on the other, he seems willing to stand up and protect residents from unjust ICE actions.”
