On Wednesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with sanitation workers, celebrating a month of union support alongside Mayor Zoran Mamdani.
Amid a gathered crowd of over 200 Teamsters Local 831 Union members in downtown Manhattan, Adams emphasized the significance of a five-year contract established in 2023 that acknowledges the work of sanitation personnel.
“When we took office, I knew what it was and I was committed to you that we would settle your contract,” Adams stated.
Local 831 is among the groups backing the mayor’s reelection campaign running independently under the “Protection and Services” line after opting out of the Democratic primary.
The union first expressed support in July, gaining backing from various police associations aligned with Adams.
Adams criticized comments from Mamdani regarding prostitution policies, saying, “Public safety is on the vote. When there are candidates in our city that think prostitution should be legal—young boys and girls are selling their bodies— that’s not the city I want to live in.”
The rally occurred shortly after a scandal involving the administration surfaced last week.
In an unusual turn during Thursday’s campaign trail, Winnie Greco, the former adviser on Asian Affairs to the mayor, handed a reporter a bag of potato chips filled with cash envelopes.
Mamdani mocked the Adams campaign following this revelation, stating, “It’s become absurd. We’re talking about allegations that are far-fetched, like a cache being packed into a chip bag. Even saying that sounds ridiculous, but this is the reality that Mayor Adams’ administration has brought upon us.”
