Mayor Adams vows to build 100K new Manhattan housing units over next decade — equal to a second UWS

Mayor Eric Adams vowed Thursday to build 100,000 new housing units across Manhattan over the next 10 years, adding to the roughly 900,000 homes already on the island.

Hizzoner's ambitious housing proposal, dubbed the “Manhattan Project,” amounts to building a brand new Upper West Side stretching from 59th Street to 96th Street, or nine more Stuytown developments.

“We call this the 'Manhattan Project,' a nod to the borough's long history as a place where families from all over the world come together to start the American dream,” Adams said in Harlem. He said this in his State of the Union address.

Adams said the initiative piggybacks on the Big Apple's current “City of Yes” plan, which aims to overhaul and revamp zoning across Manhattan, with development stretching from Inwood to the Financial District. The aim is to free up potential residential land for residential use.

The proposal aims to increase the number of housing units in Manhattan to a total of 1 million over the next 10 years and make housing more affordable for families, the mayor claimed.

“For decades, housing prices in Manhattan have increased and working-class families have been forced out,” Adams said from the famous Apollo Theater.

“From the brownstones of Harlem to the skyscrapers of Midtown, we're saying 'yes' to more housing and 'yes' to a more family-friendly city,” he said.

“Helping families pay rent or buy their first home means helping them save money. And we
We are determined to do just that. ”

Adams' plan will also include his administration's Midtown South rezoning, which has already begun.

But he paused to say which other districts could make big changes.
