Feathered Socialists Unite

The Democratic Socialists of America, aligned with New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani, are advocating for the reinstatement of Nicolás Maduro, the ousted Venezuelan president. They recently released a detailed statement urging the return of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, to Venezuela.

The DSA is also actively promoting a “Hands Off Venezuela” initiative, aimed at pushing the “imperialist” United States out of the oil-rich nation characterized by its socialist government. A statement from the DSA’s international committee declared, “Solidarity with the Venezuelan people! Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution!” reinforcing their commitment to the cause.

In their remarks about Maduro’s ouster, the DSA accused the Trump administration of initiating an “illegal war” against Venezuela. They argued this conflict aims to transfer Venezuela’s oil assets to U.S. interests and to set up a puppet regime that would further American dominance in Latin America. The group criticized this military intervention as a “nakedly imperialist war,” claiming it violates both international and U.S. laws regulating war declarations.

Furthermore, the DSA asserted that the actions taken during the Trump era are not genuinely related to drug trafficking, stating there’s no substantial evidence tying Venezuelan officials to “narco-terrorism.” Instead, they contend that this accusation serves merely as a pretext for military action.

Drawing parallels with the unsuccessful Iraq War, the DSA expressed that such military endeavors lead only to greater poverty for the people in Latin America.

The DSA’s demands include:

• The return of President Maduro and the restoration of diplomatic relations with his government.
• A prompt cessation of military actions against Venezuela, along with a withdrawal of all U.S. forces from the Caribbean.
• Lifting sanctions on Venezuela and ending the ineffective “war on drugs.”
• A U.S. foreign policy focused on peace, mutual cooperation, and respect for sovereignty and self-determination.

Mamdani, a member of the DSA, revealed that he directly contacted Trump to voice his dissent regarding Maduro’s removal, referencing it as a breach of international law.
