Protests Against ICE Continue in Los Angeles
Protests opposing ICE operations in Los Angeles have carried on, prompting Mayor Karen Bass to implement a curfew from 8 PM Thursday to 6 AM Friday. This decision came as immigration enforcement activities persisted in Southern California.
On Thursday night, LAPD detained over 20 protesters who were chanting for peaceful demonstrations. The unrest in LA escalated over the weekend, culminating in the police labeling gatherings as “illegal” on Sunday evening.
During a press conference, Bass stated the curfew would help reduce tensions between law enforcement and demonstrators. She expressed a strong desire for peace and emphasized that true tranquility must start in Washington to end what she described as raids.
What initially seemed like a peaceful protest has taken a troubling turn, with rioters burning flags, damaging police vehicles, and vandalizing property. Bass remarked, “We had to get curfew in the city because we wanted to make sure our downtown neighborhoods and all other neighborhoods were safe.”
According to LAPD, some agitators have dispersed through downtown, and gatherings are being monitored closely. In response to the situation, more than 2,000 National Guardsmen have been deployed to LA to manage ongoing protests, which are expected to persist through the weekend.
Residents might soon notice an increased military presence alongside National Guard operations beginning Friday, as authorities strive to maintain order amid the unrest.
