Mayoral candidate Katie Wilson shares strategy to protect the city from Trump's influence

Seattle Mayoral Candidate Katie Wilson Shares Plans Ahead of Primary

On Tuesday, mayoral candidate Katie Wilson discussed her vision for Seattle, aiming to prepare the city for challenges ahead, especially in light of former President Donald Trump’s policies.

In an interview with local news, Wilson described her approach using the phrase “Trump suppression.” When asked to elaborate, she noted that this encompasses efforts to protect immigrant communities and uphold rights related to protests.

She emphasized her concern regarding the potential impacts of Trump’s proposed federal spending cuts. “As mayor, my goal is to cultivate new progressive revenues, so we can maintain essential services for Seattle residents,” Wilson stated. “We need to make tough decisions and ensure we utilize our budget effectively in the coming years.”

Wilson had previously referred to the idea of making the city “trump proof.” In her 2017 campaign, she advocated for an urban income tax targeting households earning over $250,000 annually, all while serving as the general secretary for the Transit Riders Union. She has included references to this prior campaign on her current platform.

Her website mentions the necessity to “think about how to safeguard ourselves and our neighbors from more intense federal actions in the future.”

In the Democratic primary, Wilson faces incumbent Mayor Bruce Harrell, who, if he wins, would become the first Seattle mayor in two decades to secure a second term. There are also five other candidates running in the primary.

The Democratic primary is set for August 5th, followed by the general election on November 4th.
