Measles Concerns Rise in Southern California

With a growing number of measles cases reported in Southern California, health officials in San Diego County are issuing warnings about potentially challenging times ahead.

So far, San Diego County has not recorded any measles cases in 2026, but infections have been confirmed in nearby Los Angeles and Orange counties. Authorities are encouraging parents to ensure their children are vaccinated.

Measles, recognized as the most contagious disease globally, was officially eradicated in the U.S. back in 2000. However, health officials have noted a gradual resurgence, largely attributed to vaccine hesitancy, which has left many children unprotected.

Dr. Ahmad Bairony remarked on the shift he’s observed in parental attitudes regarding vaccinations. “I’ve seen firsthand that more families than ever are coming to me and expressing concern about the vaccine given the current climate,” he stated.

He added, “Unfortunately, even here in California, I think we’re heading into some dark times.”

Despite the grim outlook, Dr. Bairony remains optimistic, highlighting that there’s still time for improvement and that children should be vaccinated with the “very safe” measles vaccine that’s been around for about 40 years.

“It’s crucial to remember that parents choose to vaccinate out of love and compassion. Those who hesitate often do so from a place of fear,” he noted.

Data from San Diego County indicates that fewer than 94% of kindergarteners received the MMR vaccine during the 2023 school year, which suggests lower herd immunity compared to most other counties in Southern California.

Recently, Orange County health officials confirmed a second measles case linked to a visitor at Disneyland, as reported by local sources. The individual was at Disneyland Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 22, then at Disney California Adventure Park until closing time.

This incident follows another case connected to an international traveler who visited Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park, and a restaurant at a Disney hotel in Anaheim.

The CDC notes that measles spreads through tiny airborne droplets that can linger in the air for several hours and remain on surfaces. Symptoms typically begin with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, eventually leading to a rash that starts on the face and spreads throughout the body.
