MSNBC’s Programming Critiqued for Lack of Diversity in Perspectives

Eric Wemple, a media critic, expressed amusement at the fact that MSNBC seems to present a rather uniform perspective, particularly regarding former President Donald Trump. He noted that the network appears to embrace a motto of “I couldn’t agree any more,” highlighting a tendency toward consensus.

In a column released recently, Wemple shared his experience of watching 18 hours of MSNBC programming to evaluate whether the network includes dissenting opinions, similar to what other cable news outlets have offered since Trump took office again. He reminisced about diving into content from “Morning Joe” to prime time shows, apparently hoping to catch any fiery debates he might have missed in prior viewings.

He recounted a segment from a new evening program called “The Forenight,” where hosts like Simon Sanderstownsend and Michael Steele engaged in a lively discussion with guests. However, Wemple pointed out that this was more of an exception than the norm, noting that pro-Trump voices seem largely absent across the network.

Wemple quoted Aidan McLaughlin, the editor-in-chief, suggesting that MSNBC tends to feature anti-Trump Republicans to create an illusion of balance. He contended that this creates a situation where debates often center around strong criticisms of Trump, almost like a competition among hosts and guests.

He did acknowledge that there are rare instances of varied opinions breaking through this pattern, mentioning hosts like Ali Melver and the dynamics on “Morning Joe,” where pro-Trump guests occasionally appear. Nonetheless, he insisted that the overall approach has resulted in a predictable form of programming, where individuals usually agree with one another.

Wemple compared MSNBC’s current stance with other networks, stating that even though CNN occasionally provides space for pro-Trump arguments, at least viewers there get to hear those perspectives, albeit mixed with confusion. He concluded his reflections with a piece of advice: perhaps it’s better to just read newspapers for a more nuanced understanding.

In response to concerns about biases within the network, a spokesperson for MSNBC highlighted their range of Republican commentators, affirming that there are anti-Trump voices represented. However, the network declined to comment further on Wemple’s critique.

Interestingly, this commentary came on the heels of poor viewership numbers for Jen Psaki’s new primetime program, which reportedly lost 53% of viewers in key demographics during its second episode.
