False Claims Surrounding Charlie Kirk’s Assassination
Recently, it was revealed that Reuters made inaccurate assertions linking the assassination of Charlie Kirk to far-right elements. These claims were later edited from the original article without notifying readers, as flagged by the Foundation for Freedom Online.
Archives of the initial Reuters article indicate that the news agency relied on insights from “Democracy Experts” at the Carnegie Foundation, known for its attempts to combat what it labels “online disinformation.”
In the original article, experts were cited saying evidence from a bullet casing hinted at the involvement of far-right groups.
Right, left, or crazy?
Democracy and security experts commented that deciphering the messages inscribed on shell casings retrieved by authorities would be challenging. One message read, “Hey fascist! Catch!” followed by directional arrows reminiscent of sequences in popular video games.
Rachel Kleinfeld, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Fund for International Peace, suggested that the symbols indicated the shooter was part of the so-called Greuper movement, associated with far-right commentator Nick Fuentes.
“It’s using video game memes, anti-gay sentiments, and reflects a kind of ironic eclectic ideological stance,” she mentioned. “It leans in a certain direction, but it’s definitely diverse.”
However, the article was later amended to omit any direct claims that the symbolism on the bullet casing indicated a connection to far-right ideologies. This revision was made quietly, without any notes to inform readers of the updates, according to the Foundation for Freedom Online.
Right, left, or crazy?
In an updated version, Kleinfeld stated, “In a sense, the ideological beliefs of the attackers aren’t what matter.” She emphasized that societal perception plays a more crucial role. “Violence often thrives on finger-pointing, regardless of the individual’s beliefs.”
Further, she noted that perpetrators of political violence aren’t easily categorized but are often driven by a mix of conspiracy theories and mental health issues. “So, it’s no surprise this individual appears to lean toward far-right beliefs,” she added.
The Foundation for Freedom Online highlighted that the Carnegie Foundation has played a significant role in advancing online censorship while claiming to combat “disinformation.” Over the past decade, it has received substantial funding from various U.S. federal sources, totaling millions and extending to international partners.
Interestingly, the narrative suggesting a far-right inclination is not entirely consistent with other findings about the shooter, whose actions seem to demonstrate a rejection of traditional leftist motives, such as “fascism” and “hatred.”
One of the inscriptions on the bullet shell read “Hey, fascist! Catch!” which echoes the lyrics of an Italian anti-Mussolini protest song.
Reports suggest that the shooter expressed specific intentions towards Kirk, indicating a deeply rooted animosity. The media’s focus on a far-right narrative has continued to circulate following Kirk’s assassination, with various outlets publishing similar theories to that of Reuters.
