Media, Dems struggle to cope with Donald Trump’s landslide Iowa caucuses victory

Democrats and the media are downplaying the importance of the Iowa caucus victory in dealing with Donald Trump's political resurgence.

Trump's historic landslide victory was unconventional. He did not participate in any of the Republican debates before the caucuses and sparred publicly with some of Iowa's most politically influential figures, including Gov. Kim Reynolds (R). went. But it didn't matter. Trump received more than 50% support from caucus attendees and nearly all of Iowa's 99 counties, the largest margin in the Iowa Republican caucuses.

But Trump's opponents quickly sought to downplay the feat.

“Nearly half of the Republican base that attended tonight's caucuses voted against Donald Trump,” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (Democratic) said on MSNBC.

“Think about it. This is the most famous Republican. He is, you know, the guy who basically built the modern Republican Party…The Democrats are up against half the people in that party. did not vote for Donald Trump.” Ta.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough made a similar claim on “Morning Joe” the morning after the caucus.

Trump's gains are “bad news” for Republicans, Scarborough said. only The approval rating among caucus participants was 51%.

“I want to look at this another way: If Barack Obama took four years off and ran in the Democratic caucuses in Iowa, would 50% of Democrats vote against him? ?No, no, they won't vote,'' Scarborough said. He then added, “The fact that 50% of people voted against the former president in the Iowa caucuses is bad news, not good news, for the party's prospects in the general election.”

But this argument is completely stupid.

Their argument suggests that because half of Iowa Republicans chose not to support President Trump in their caucuses, those voters will support President Joe Biden in the general election. However, there is no evidence to support this conclusion.

Few Republican voters who oppose Trump will vote for Biden. Instead, the majority of anti-Trump Republicans are likely to vote for, nominate, or vote for a third party. against Biden — by voting for Trump.
