Media frets about racism after yet another DEI-obsessed university president apparently committed plagiarism

University of Maryland President Darryl Pines has been accused of plagiarizing parts of his own thesis from a website. However, rather than reporting the incident as it is, some media outlets reporting on the allegations have chosen to The Daily Wirewas the first media outlet to expose Pines' academic misconduct allegations.

Claims

Earlier this month, The Daily Wire reported that Pines, an aerospace engineer with a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), had cited about 1,500 words from the website in a 5,000-word article he co-authored with Leeming Salvino.

“Historical and technical reviews often use repetitive language to provide a framework for past work.”

Their paper was first published in 2002. Much of the text of that paper was republished in another journal in 2006.

The website that Pines and Salvino are believed to have plagiarized from is Wavelet SurfingThis site was created in 1996 by Joshua Altman, who was a university student in Australia at the time. The website has not been updated since 1996.

To demonstrate the extent of the apparently plagiarized material, The Daily Wire ran a side-by-side comparison of excerpts from Altman's website and Pines and Salvino's 2002 article. Aside from a few sentences that appear to have been omitted, the wording is nearly identical.

Pines and Salvino also took the trouble to translate Altman's British spelling into American spelling, e.g. Analyzed and Localized instead Analyzed and LocalizedThe co-authors may have accidentally made a spelling mistake in the process. Make an effort Altman is effort.

According to the Daily Wire, neither the 2002 nor the 2006 article cites Altman or his website, but both articles include all of Altman's footnotes “down to the page numbers.”

Pines List of Published Scholarships Neither article is listed on his university's website, resume.

According to the Daily Wire, Pines also allegedly used ChatGPT this month to create a speech for a presentation about a pro-Palestinian rally scheduled for October 7. Pines claimed the information came from “undergraduate research.”

Asked for comment, University of Maryland spokeswoman Katie Lawson, rather than denying the accusations, said:

It is not uncommon for historical and technical reviews to use repetitive language to provide a framework for past research. Establishing this common understanding in the scientific community enables the application of new techniques, which is what Dr. Pines and Dr. Salvino considered when testing a new application of Hilbert phase. The use of conventional or common language in introductory material does not imply completeness of the data or veracity of the findings.

Following the Daily Wire's shocking reporting, Pines called for an independent investigation into his work. “While I do not believe there is any basis for these allegations, an impartial investigation is in the university's best interest,” he said.

In a statement, he maintained that his “results, data and findings are reliable,” but acknowledged that on the surface he had included “repeated language in the introduction” of his 2002 and 2006 papers.

Even Jonathan Bailey, a self-described plagiarism expert, acknowledged that Pines' case “appears to be one of the strongest allegations” of academic misconduct recently made against predominantly black professors and administrators at colleges and universities.

“There are whole sections of papers here that are written almost verbatim, or even verbatim,” Bailey said.

“Black people, follow your path or you will be gone.”

In other words, there is ample evidence to support the allegations against Pines, but rather than investigating it, multiple news outlets and organizations are trying to determine The Daily Wire's motives for reporting it.

And most of them seem to have come to the conclusion that people who report on alleged black plagiarists are just racists.

“The Daily Wire is a conservative publication with ties to national figures that often opposes diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and specializes in inflammatory content,” they wrote. Baltimore Banner.

“The allegations against Dr. Pines come after a series of plagiarism allegations have been made in recent months against scholars working on diversity initiatives at the university, as well as scholars of color.” The New York Times.

Inside Higher Education “In recent months, we have seen repeated attacks on scholars of color by conservative activists and publications,” he lamented.

American black engineer information technologyThe publication, which describes itself as “the magazine of the STEM community,” even went so far as to portray Pines as the victim of a racist witch hunt: “Despite his years of leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion, some believe his current challenges are part of a broader backlash against DEI.”

“Black people, follow your path or you will be gone,” USBEIT added ominously.

Pines is black and is a DEI activist at the University of Maryland. He is so committed to racial issues that the opening paragraph of his book reads: University History It boasts of its efforts to build a “diverse and multicultural community.”

As part of that effort, he Terrapin Strong The initiative aims to “welcome new members to our community, promote a sense of inclusivity and belonging, and align with the University of Maryland's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.”

In a statement calling for a review of her job, Pines suggested she had been unfairly targeted by ruthless investigators, lamenting, “Like so many other presidents and chancellors of higher education institutions, I have faced intense personal and professional scrutiny.”

According to the Baltimore Banner, the University of Michigan's Office of Research Integrity will review his work and communicate its findings to President Jay Parman through the Faculty Affairs Division of the Dean's Office.

Altman could not be reached for comment, and Salvino declined to comment, the Banner reported.
