Media Misrepresentation of ICE’s Activities

Once again, mainstream media seems to have misrepresented facts concerning illegal immigration, specifically by alleging that ICE has been targeting daycare centers and frightening children.

A headline in the Chicago Sun-Times stated, “Parents want answers after federal arrest of child care worker – ‘The incident destroyed us.'” It also mentioned the Chicago mayor’s condemnation of the ICE action, calling it a situation that “shocks the conscience.”

In reaction, Blaze TV host Sarah Gonzalez questioned whether the portrayal was overly dramatic. “I mean, it sounds really, really dramatic. It sounds like a terrible thing,” she commented, before airing a clip of the arrest. The footage depicted the childcare worker initially resisting arrest before calming down.

Gonzalez later identified the individual as Diana Patricia Santillana Galeano, an undocumented immigrant from Colombia. She argued that this woman was not exactly an innocent party.

Continuing her point, Gonzalez explained that, according to reports, Santillana allegedly paid a smuggler to bring two minors, aged 16 and 17, into the U.S. illegally through the southern border. “I’m not entirely sure if she was aware of the implications, but it’s clear that facilitating human smuggling is a crime. Engaging in such activities certainly puts those young people at risk,” she noted.

Despite mainstream media’s claims of ICE deliberately targeting daycare facilities, the Department of Homeland Security provided a different account. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated, “ICE law enforcement was not targeting a daycare. Officers attempted a traffic stop on this undocumented woman from Colombia. This vehicle was registered to her, but the male driver refused to stop.” She explained that the situation escalated when the suspects fled to a daycare center, ultimately endangering the children inside.

Gonzalez emphasized that perhaps the anger should be directed at those involved in illegal activities, rather than at ICE. “They essentially put the kids at risk during the situation and created panic. It seems like misplaced outrage,” she observed.

She concluded with a stronger sentiment: “The American people are done with this.”
