Macklemore’s Feud with Ed Sheeran Featured in Al Mayadeen
The Iran-friendly media outlet Al Mayadeen showcased several articles and videos on Thursday discussing the ongoing conflict between Seattle rapper Macklemore and his former touring partner, Ed Sheeran. This feud reportedly escalated after Macklemore was taken off the tour, allegedly due to his “pro-Palestinian” messages during performances.
In the Arts & Culture section of Al Mayadeen’s front page, there were four pieces—three of which were supportive of Macklemore, criticizing Sheeran for his refusal to denounce Israel and for not backing Macklemore’s use of his platform for political statements. One of the featured videos was titled “Dropped from Sheeran’s tour over Palestine: Macklemore says it was ‘most successful tour.’”
The latest story highlighted Macklemore’s commitment to donate $1 million of his tour earnings to “Palestinian support groups.” He mentioned the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) as one of the recipients in a social media post. It’s worth noting that UNRWA has been linked to support for Hamas, a group denounced internationally. In August 2024, the UN indicated that some of its employees were believed to have participated in the deadly October 7, 2023, attack in Israel that resulted in significant civilian casualties.
Al Mayadeen described Macklemore being removed from the Ed Sheeran tour after he expressed support for Palestine during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. However, the article failed to mention that his interjection during the concert to deliver political commentary caused discomfort among attendees who came to see Sheeran.
In another article, Al Mayadeen echoed calls from certain Islamist and far-left groups for a boycott of Ed Sheeran. This was in response to his statement defending his right to remain neutral on political issues as a musician. The piece praised Macklemore for advocating a boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest due to Israel’s participation, while questioning whether Sheeran is being apolitical or merely selective in his political stances.
The content also featured video clips of Macklemore’s anti-Israel rhetoric that led to his exit from the tour, alongside images of him in a keffiyeh and seemingly unrelated images of Palestinians in Gaza, framing the narrative surrounding the incident.
Al Mayadeen is recognized for its pro-Iran, pro-Hezbollah, and anti-American editorial slant. The outlet often references Israel in quotes to convey a perspective that challenges its legitimacy. Additionally, it tends to provide coverage supporting regimes that are in opposition to the United States.
Though the outlet usually doesn’t delve deeply into American entertainment issues, it appears to have started focusing on Macklemore in 2024, particularly after he released a song that condemned Israel following a violent episode on a university campus.
Macklemore initially gained fame in the early 2010s as part of the duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, whose album The Heist featured several Billboard hits. The rapid ascent in his career also drew criticism, as some argued he was overshadowing artists from the genre’s roots in the Black American community. The backlash intensified when another artist, Iggy Azalea, shared a controversial photo alongside Macklemore. In response to this, Macklemore later commented on the complexities of race and privilege in a series of interviews and through his subsequent music, maintaining a focus on politically charged themes throughout his career.
