Meghan Markle Discusses Life After Royal Family
Meghan Markle recently shared that she’s “taking it easy and recovering” after stepping away from royal duties, a statement that some royal experts perceived as a veiled criticism of Prince Harry’s family.
On October 14, she appeared at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, D.C., where she talked about her and Harry’s decision to leave the royal family and relocate to California in 2020.
During her address, the Duchess of Sussex noted that at the time, she had “no plans” aside from “nesting and healing” as she adjusted to her new life.
Expectations vs. Reality
“I think five years ago it was very different for all of us. Archie was little, and I was pregnant with Lili around that time. So we were nesting. We were also healing,” she remarked.
“I don’t know if I had the capacity back then to think about what my ‘big picture’ dreams were. It was more about just getting through those next few years and creating a community, which has always meant a lot to both of us.” She emphasized the importance of building connections in new environments.
Markle and Prince Harry stepped away from their senior roles in the royal family in 2020, moving to Montecito, California. They now have two children: Archie, aged 6, and Lilibet, aged 4.
Hilary Fordwich, a royal expert, commented that Markle’s remarks seemed to be a way to “reframe her narrative” while subtly criticizing the royal family.
“Her comments are, once again, a not-so-subtle critique on the monarchy’s alleged interpersonal issues,” Fordwich noted.
She added that Markle is trying to reshape her story, suggesting her independence while hinting at past grievances with the royal family. “If she’s not aware of this, it shows a lack of self-awareness. If it’s deliberate, then it reflects poorly, especially her comments about ‘nesting’ and a lack of planning,” Fordwich observed.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Markle is on a PR campaign to promote her own brand while emphasizing her difficult experiences within the royal family. Chard remarked, “Meghan has no loyalty to the royal family but knows how valuable the royal connection is for her brand.”
Chard also expressed that by recalling her challenging times, Markle finds justification for her actions with little regard for consequences. “For her, things seem to be looking up,” he concluded.
Amanda Matta, another royal commentator, indicated that Markle’s statement about not having a plan helps contextualize the series of decisions she and Harry made in 2020. “It’s great to hear her say this openly. It paints the early years in California not as part of a grand strategy but rather as a scramble to establish stability post-royalty,” she explained.
Despite some interpretations, Matta believes Markle’s comments do not attack the royal family but reflect the challenge of reinventing oneself away from institutional constraints.
“This sounds like an honest reflection of how difficult it is to reinvent yourself after breaking away from the institutions that dictate every detail of your life,” Matta said.
Former royal photographer Ian Pelham Turner also affirmed this perspective, suggesting Markle is processing her experiences and moving forward with her life. “The negativity directed at her attempts to work and build a life is significant,” he stated.
Richard Fitzwilliams, another royal expert, added that Markle had seemingly overlooked some critical aspects of her past during her speech, alluding to the destructive family tensions that developed during her brief time as a working royal.
In summary, it seems that Meghan Markle is navigating a complex path as she reflects on her time in the royal family while trying to construct her own identity outside of it, with reactions varying widely from praise for her honesty to critiques of her underlying motives.
