Former first lady Melania Trump questioned the police response to the assassination attempt on her husband in a video released Tuesday to promote her new book.
So 34 second video Melania Trump began the video, posted to her X account, by describing the assassination attempt on her husband as a “horrific and heartbreaking experience.” Now, over dramatic instrumental music, she says, “The silence around it is oppressive.”
“I wonder why law enforcement didn't arrest him before the speech,” she says in the video. “There's definitely more to this story and we need to find out the truth.”
The video then goes black and ends with an image of the cover of her new memoir, “Melania,” along with a link to purchase it.
Donald Trump himself recently blamed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the assassination attempt, without any evidence, and blamed the Secret Service for making it difficult for him to find personnel to protect him. Conspiracy theories about the shooting have been circulating among Republicans and on the right.
There is no evidence that the President or Vice President of the United States were directly involved in or interfered with Secret Service arrangements, nor is there any evidence that there was a broader plan to attack President Trump beyond the lone shooter, who died shortly after opening fire.
Melania's WebsiteHer memoir is described as “the powerful and inspiring story of a woman who defined personal excellence, overcame adversity, and forged her own path,” and is available to pre-order for $40, according to .
A signed version is also available for $75, while a collector's edition that includes an autograph, bonus photos, and a “digital collectible” is available for $250.
The FBI and Secret Service have come under intense scrutiny and criticism over security at rallies since the July 13 assassination attempt by suspect Thomas Crooks (20) on Trump in Pennsylvania while he was speaking at a campaign rally.
Trump survived the shooting but suffered an ear injury, one rally attendee was killed and two others injured in the attack, and the gunman was shot dead by a Secret Service officer at the scene.
The former first lady's comments Tuesday came amid an ongoing investigation into what happened that day and the decisions and actions of staff leading up to it.
Over the past two months, new details have emerged about the events leading up to July 13, apparent failures in security and communication between and by law enforcement agencies, and the shooter himself, including his search history and preparation for the attack, but FBI officials have yet to reveal a motive for the attack.
In late July, the director of the Secret Service resigned after a hearing in which he was criticized by lawmakers for security failings surrounding the shooting and for failing to answer specific questions about what went wrong. The next day, the House of Representatives voted to create a special committee to investigate security failings at the rally, and in late August, at least five U.S. Secret Service agents were placed on administrative leave in connection with the July 13 rally.
