First Lady Melania Trump has been instrumental in negotiating a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, aimed at facilitating humanitarian aid and civilian evacuations.
On Friday, the White House announced that the ceasefire is set to commence on October 29th. This will allow civilians in the contested city of Oleshky to evacuate via a “designated safe passageway.”
“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. The remaining population is mostly elderly, who urgently need medical help, medicine, food, and clean water,” the First Lady noted. “They have limited electricity, live near mined roads, and endure constant military attacks. It was clear that, without my intervention, getting humanitarian aid into the city and evacuating these elderly residents would be impossible.”
In her role as a direct intermediary, Trump engaged in discussions with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders. Together with her representative, she worked out the terms, goals, timing, and procedures of this agreement, according to the White House.
“My representative and I leveraged the communication channel we had established through previous reunifications of 34 displaced children,” she explained. “Both nations quickly assigned teams to coordinate the complex logistics involved, including demining efforts. Everyone has worked tirelessly since then.”
The “exigent circumstances of Oleshky” were first brought to her attention during private discussions at her Fostering the Future Together event, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in September. This means that the assigned teams have had less than a month to put the localized ceasefire into action.
Trump has maintained a direct line of communication with both countries for several months and has used that channel to facilitate multiple rounds of reunifications for children affected by the prolonged conflict.
“Non-military, civilian leaders from both countries will collaborate to visit Oleshky residents and assess their needs. For those wishing to evacuate, we will ensure coordinated support and transportation to their desired destination. Some may choose to go to Russia, while others might prefer Ukraine,” she stated.
The U.S. will monitor the progress of these humanitarian efforts to ensure compliance with the agreement to halt military actions in the area.
She added, “I have also arranged for an impartial American media organization to accompany and document the efforts of the Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground. This will be crucial in respecting the wishes of each family involved.”
