Melania Trump: "Putin and I have maintained a direct line of communication" about Ukrainian children without homes

First Lady Melania Trump Discusses Communication with Putin on Children’s Welfare

On October 10, 2025, First Lady Melania Trump shared from the White House that she is keeping “open channels of communication” with Russian President Vladimir Putin about children impacted by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

During a morning address in the Blue Room, Melania mentioned that her team is collaborating directly with Putin. She highlighted that within the last 24 hours, eight children had been reunited with their families.

“We must foster a future for our children that is full of possibilities, safe, and free will. A world where dreams come true, not marred by war,” she stated.

In August, Melania had previously sent a letter to Putin, appealing for peace and asking him to consider the children suffering due to the war.

“Mr. Putin, you can single-handedly restore their melodious laughter,” her letter remarked. “By protecting the innocence of these children, you will not only serve Russia but humanity itself.”

She indicated that there have been positive developments following that communication. Melania quoted Putin, saying, “[He] responded in writing, indicating his readiness to engage in direct dialogue with me and outlining details regarding Ukrainian children living in Russia.” She noted that this has led to ongoing discussions concerning the welfare of these children.

The First Lady mentioned that three of the eight children reunited were “deported to the Russian Federation to fight on the front lines,” while the remaining five had become separated from their families amid the conflict. Thanks to the cooperation from Russia, they were able to identify these children and receive photos and biographies, which the U.S. government confirmed as accurate.

Back in 2022, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin, citing war crimes including the abduction of Ukrainian children.

“As First Lady, this is an important initiative for me,” Melania stated. “This system is built on common purpose and lasting impact. My ongoing mission is twofold: to optimize the transparent and free exchange of health-related information about all child victims of this war and to ensure regular communication with their families until each individual returns home.”

She also acknowledged that Russia has raised concerns about people displaced by the war, with many children who were affected now becoming adults amid ongoing turmoil.

“Given the dangers of traveling through this war-torn region, their safe return requires coordinated support,” Melania remarked. “This remains an ongoing effort. Plans are already underway to reunite more children in the near future. We hope that peace will come soon. It can start with our children.”
