First Lady Signs Executive Order for Foster Care Support
In a remarkable event on Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump and her husband joined forces to sign an executive order aimed at bolstering resources for teenagers in foster care.
“Far too many individuals in the foster care system find themselves homeless and at risk on the streets of America,” the First Lady stated prior to the signing. She expressed hope that this initiative would spark a significant national movement, one that would lead to a future filled with compassion and innovation.
This executive order, co-signed by both Trumps, is particularly aligned with Melania Trump’s project known as “Developing the Future.” Its focus is to enhance the transition for youth aging out of foster care, providing scholarships and educational opportunities.
The “Developing the Future” initiative is an extension of the “Be Best” program that the First Lady introduced during her husband’s first term. This broader initiative seeks to promote children’s well-being, addressing bullying and substance abuse among other issues.
President Trump’s executive order reflects a key objective of his administration, particularly through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It aims to create more pathways for teenagers in foster care as they approach adulthood.
The directive instructs HHS to simplify data collection related to child welfare, collaborate with private companies, and engage faith-based organizations to ensure that state and local authorities do not hinder their involvement in federal welfare programs.
As of last September, nearly 329,000 children were reported in the foster care system. This figure represents a decline from about 437,000 in 2017, according to data from HHS’s Office of Children and Families.
However, the educational outcomes for these youth remain concerning. Only 55% manage to graduate high school, and a meager 10% proceed to complete a college degree.
Moreover, statistics suggest that one in ten individuals incarcerated in the U.S. has experienced foster care.
During the ceremony in the East Room of the White House, the president acknowledged the First Lady’s impressive skills, mentioning her fluency in five languages. “I couldn’t do that,” he humorously remarked. “Thank you, Melania. Our country is fortunate to have such a wonderful and caring First Lady.”
“We hold the belief that every American child deserves a safe, loving environment, and we are committed to supporting the families who contribute to that vision,” he later emphasized.
He also referenced the Bible to highlight the importance of supporting the vulnerable. “The Bible teaches that one measure of a society is how it treats its children and orphans,” he noted, underlining its significance.
After the signing, the First Lady also added her signature to the executive order as a symbolic act.
Jaco Buens, who heads an anti-trafficking organization, commended the executive order, describing it as a strong declaration that every child is respected and deserves the future they are meant to have. “The Creating the Future initiative led by our First Lady and President isn’t merely a policy change; it’s a prophetic mandate,” he shared.
