Melania Trump to Lead the U.N. Security Council Meeting

The United States is set to assume rotating responsibilities on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this Monday, marking a historic moment as First Lady Melania Trump will preside over a council meeting, a first for any sitting First Lady.

A source close to the First Lady mentioned that she plans to deliver a speech focusing on “the importance of education and knowledge in fostering lasting peace.”

“This is a significant milestone for her as she redefines her role. It’s the first time a First Lady has addressed the Security Council, reinforcing the mission to empower the next generation through education and technology,” the official commented.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Walz expressed that it’s “fitting” for Mrs. Trump, who is dedicated to advocating for children, to lead on her first day as President of the Security Council.

“Her message about assisting the powerless through education and technology aligns perfectly with the UN’s mission for meaningful peace,” Walz added.

He elaborated, stating, “In my experience as a Green Beret and now as a diplomat, I’ve seen that peace is more likely when children are educated without fear.”

The UNSC includes five permanent members: the United States, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom, along with ten non-permanent members serving two-year terms.

The presidency of the UNSC rotates monthly, with the United States set to pass on its leadership to non-permanent member Bahrain in April, following the United Kingdom’s presidency in March. Typically, the ambassador or senior minister from the country holding the presidency presides over meetings.

In 2018, Mrs. Trump initiated the “Be Best” campaign to protect children’s interests online. During the second Trump administration, the Presidential AI Challenge aimed to inspire students and educators to create innovative AI solutions to local issues while nurturing interest in AI.

In August 2025, Mrs. Trump wrote a letter ahead of a meeting with President Donald Trump, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to safeguard children’s innocence and “serve humanity itself.”

“We must aspire to envision a dignified world for all, allowing every individual to awaken to peace and secure a promising future,” stated Mrs. Trump’s letter.

In October, she revealed that eight children displaced by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine had been reunited with their families, thanks to established “open channels of communication” initiated when President Putin responded to her August letter.

The First Lady’s office confirmed that the theme for Monday’s Security Council meeting will be “Children, Technology and Education in Conflict.”

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric remarked that the First Lady’s participation underscores “the significance the United States places on the Security Council and its agenda.”
