Meryl Streep adds SAVE America Act scare tactics to her Colbert interview wrap-up, transitioning from fashion to politics

Standoff Over SAVE America Act Continues

The SAVE America Act, which mandates that individuals present proof of their American citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections, is currently at a standstill in the Senate. It’s been three weeks of heated discussions, a failed attempt at a closing vote due to a Democratic filibuster, and the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security adds to the strain.

Critics argue that the legislation could disenfranchise many married women. Statistics show that around 80% of these women change their last names when they marry, leading to discrepancies between their legal names and those on their birth certificates—typically the primary form of identification for citizenship. This situation could necessitate obtaining extra documents, like marriage certificates or renewal papers, which many people might find challenging or even lost.

Actress Meryl Streep seems to be stepping into the spotlight against the SAVE America Act. During a segment on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” she brought up the bill and echoed these concerns.

Pat Gray discussed this clip on his show, “Pat Gray Unleashed.”

Near the show’s conclusion, after a lengthy discussion about Streep’s new film, “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” Colbert inquired if she had any other topics in mind. Streep seized the opportunity to voice her worries about the SAVE America Act affecting married women.

“If the American Rescue Act passes, every married woman who changes her name will have to visit the registrar to prove her identity,” Streep commented.

“Going to vote in November could disqualify you if the name on your birth certificate doesn’t match what’s on the voter registry. It’s really frustrating because you have to do this, or else you might get turned away. I think it’s essential that we amplify women’s voices, especially now,” she added.

Meanwhile, Pat reacted strongly against the narrative from Hollywood.

“It’s just outright lies coming from these folks,” he remarked.

“I doubt she recognizes it as false. She probably follows along with left-leaning figures, convinced of their narratives,” he continued.

Furthermore, Pat stated that Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), one of the bill’s co-founders, has consistently refuted claims regarding the legislation’s potential to disenfranchise married women. Lee has asserted that the SAVE America Act includes measures to address name discrepancies, allowing women to simply provide supporting documents like marriage certificates or to sign an affidavit affirming their citizenship before states can validate the information.

“Nobody gets left behind when it comes to voting,” co-host Keith Marinak explained.

“The only way to convince people the SAVE America Act is harmful is to spread misinformation. It’s a tactic they use. They just sit around and lie, as if they have an agenda.”
