Metropolitan Museum of Art Cancels John Galliano Exhibit
The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on Monday that it will no longer move forward with plans for an exhibit featuring designer John Galliano, following backlash over his antisemitic remarks made 15 years ago.
This exhibit was meant to honor Galliano as part of the upcoming Costume Institute show scheduled for May 2027, which serves as a precursor to the annual Met Gala.
The criticism stemmed from Galliano’s arrest and his conviction in 2011 for making racist and antisemitic comments during an intoxicated outburst at a bar in Paris.
Max Hollein, the museum’s director and CEO, mentioned that, “after thoughtful discussions with John Galliano, we have together decided not to proceed with the exhibition.”
On August 31, Galliano released a statement on Instagram, expressing, “After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.”
He acknowledged his past mistakes, stating, “I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry.”
Galliano also emphasized that true atonement is not achieved through a single exhibition or public acknowledgment but requires ongoing responsibility and the commitment to listening and learning.
To prevent the event from becoming a source of controversy, he remarked, “I do not want the debate surrounding me to place the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute.”
He further acknowledged, “I also recognize and respect that an exhibition honoring my work would be painful for some.”
According to a report from the Associated Press, the museum plans to replace the Galliano exhibit with another show, which will be announced at a later date.
Galliano is a well-known figure in the fashion industry and has been celebrated as one of its leading talents. He previously served as the creative director for Christian Dior but was dismissed from that role following the release of his offensive remarks.
