Tragic Sentencing Hearing for Murder of Austin Metcalfe
The courtroom was filled with deep emotions on Tuesday as the family of 17-year-old Austin Metcalfe delivered a heartfelt victim impact statement after the sentencing of 19-year-old Carmelo Anthony. Anthony received a 35-year prison sentence following a jury’s guilty verdict for the murder that occurred during a track meet in Frisco in April 2025. The outcome of the trial allowed the Metcalfe family to express their grief directly to Anthony, highlighting the irreversible impact of the tragic event.
Megan Metcalfe, Austin’s mother, openly wept while describing the profound emptiness in her life since losing her son, who she characterized as a gentle soul and an affectionate individual. She painted a vivid picture of her daily reality, emphasizing the stark silence that has replaced the life and energy that once filled their home. To Anthony, she conveyed that her son hadn’t just died; he had been stolen from her.
Moreover, she reflected on the reality that while Anthony will be behind bars for more than three decades, her son will forever remain absent from her life, leaving only unidirectional conversations at his grave.
Jeff Metcalfe, Austin’s father, shared his sorrow through tears as cherished photos of Austin flashed across a screen. He recounted memories from his son’s early years, expressing admiration for his son’s character and athletic talents. Jeff faced the courtroom with a mix of grief and indignation, addressing the public discussion surrounding the trial. He firmly stated that the tragedy had nothing to do with race, expressing frustration over attempts to distort his son’s memory. He described living with a deep sadness that transcends mere grief, expressing that the act of losing his son amounted to a betrayal of deeper social connections.
“My son’s death destroyed who I was,” he stated. “He doesn’t exist anymore… Grief is not just sadness; it’s raw, unfiltered anger… You failed in every way imaginable. A part of me died with my son, and yet I must continue on.”
“You will go to prison. I forgave you immediately, but I cannot forgive what you did,” he asserted, addressing Anthony directly.
Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalfe, also made an emotional plea, asking Anthony to look him in the eye as he expressed the pain of losing his closest companion. Hunter spoke about the difficulties of grappling with his brother’s absence, stating that he has chosen faith to navigate the heartbreak. He characterized Anthony’s actions as a product of evil, vowing that while Anthony might eventually be forgotten, Austin’s legacy, filled with kindness and respect, would endure.
“You took my son, my brother, my best friend. You also stole away the person who would have become an uncle to my future children,” he reportedly said.
The grief extended to Austin’s aunt, Marley Needham, who detailed the ongoing void her family faces. She recounted the heartbreaking moment she had to inform her grandmother of Austin’s passing and fondly remembered watching him excel in sports. Needham emphasized the reliance on faith to navigate their loss while questioning the reasons behind the tragedy. Concluding her remarks, she underscored that this case represents a painful reality for their family, not just a news story.
“This is not just a story. This is our reality, and we will bear this loss indefinitely,” she said.
