The Mets’ late comeback was cut short in heartbreaking fashion.
With the count at full in the bottom of the ninth, the Mets were trailing the Giants, 8-7, with the bases loaded.
It was a golden opportunity for New York to end a three-game losing streak, but it was ultimately denied by some great play from Giants third baseman Matt Chapman.
Mets up-and-comer Mark Vientos threw a ball down the third base line, and Chapman caught it with his bare hands, scooping up the low throw to get Vientos out at first base, preventing the tying run in a breathtaking final play.
It was the Mets’ fourth straight loss and the first of three straight.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited after a play,” Chapman said after the game. “To get that walk-off defensive play with the bases loaded and the game on the line, I think that was definitely a great play. I was a little surprised myself, so it was a lot of fun.”

Catcher Patrick Bailey, who hit a grand slam to give the Giants the lead in the eighth inning, couldn’t believe his play.
“Oh my gosh, that was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen on a baseball field,” he said.
The Mets have lost nine of their last 11 games and will be looking to bounce back on Saturday.
