Mets lose to Phillies after giving up a four-run lead in a tough defeat

Philadelphia – Mets’ Hope Fades with Defeat

In a surprising turn of events, the Mets started strong in a recent game, creating some optimism among fans. However, what began as a promising outing ultimately unraveled, revealing more of a grim pattern. For the Mets, this seems less like a minor setback and more like a significant downturn.

Managed by Carlos Mendoza, the team lost a four-run lead, succumbing to a 6-4 defeat at Citizens Bank Park, marking one of the most painful losses of the series on Thursday.

The Mets (76-71), who boasted a record of 45-24 on June 12 and led the NL East by 5½ games, now find themselves out of the division race. They’re barely clinging to a 1½ game wildcard lead over the idle Giants and Reds.

Looking ahead, Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto will face the Rangers’ Jacob DeGrom, who’s riding a six-game winning streak into the matchup.

It seems everything went wrong—starting pitchers faltered, defensive errors piled up, and the offense went silent. While these losses might not rank as the worst of the season, the timing and circumstances make them feel especially crushing.

Despite initial success, the game’s turn was particularly painful. The Mets took the lead early, scoring four runs with their first six batters, highlighted by key hits from Mark Vientos, Brandon Nimmo, and Starling Marte. After struggling to score in their previous four games against other pitchers, they managed to find their rhythm, but it didn’t last long.

However, the Phillies’ left-handed pitcher then retired the next 22 Mets batters in a row, showing just how frustrating the game had become. Vientos vented his frustration after a strikeout, slamming his bat and helmet in a moment of exasperation.

Jeff McNeill expressed his own frustration by tossing his gear after also striking out for the second time. In the end, Phillies pitcher Joan Duran had a perfect game for eight innings, claiming victory with authority.
