Mets survive Game 5 vs. Dodgers to send NLCS back to Los Angeles

The 2024 New York Mets will play at least one more game.

Facing elimination against a previously dominant Dodgers team, the Mets rallied their batters at home Friday to win Game 5 of the National League CS, 12-6.

With this win, the Mets avoided elimination and a sweep in all three games of the home series.

The Mets, who lost the series 3-2, will return to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles for Game 6, needing two consecutive wins to advance to the World Series. The Dodgers only need to win one game.

Pete Alonso hit an early three-run homer and the Mets hit a helpless Jack Flaherty to extend the National League Championship Series.

Starling Marte had three doubles, four hits, and three RBIs for New York. Francisco Alvarez broke out of his slump with three hits, including a five-run RBI in the third inning. Francisco Lindor and Jesse Winker each had a triple.

After losing a late lead, the Guardians used a long ball to snatch a miraculous walk-off victory.

After losing badly in three of their first four games, including the previous two at home, the wild-card Mets salvaged their season for the second time in this playoffs, both with Alonso's three-run home run. It was thanks to

Sean Manaea is expected to start in New York after five days of rest, but the Dodgers are likely to play another bullpen game as their rotation is thin due to injuries.

Despite having a chance to lead his hometown team to the World Series, Flaherty failed. After pitching well with a two-hit shutout in seven innings in Game 1, Alonso hit a 432-foot low slider to center field for his fourth home run of the postseason, putting him down 3-0 to four batters. Ta.

Alonso, who is poised to become a prized free agent this fall, also led to a game-winning shot against the Mets, who are facing elimination in Game 3 of the wild-card series in Milwaukee. The game was even more dramatic, with New York trailing 2-0 until the final two outs of the ninth inning.

However, Alonso once again worked hard to extend his tenure in a Mets uniform.

Flaherty allowed eight hits and eight runs in three innings. This is the first time since St. Louis vs. Pittsburgh in September 2022 that he did not strike out a batter.

The Mets, who had 12 strikeouts on Thursday night, didn't have a single strikeout in Game 5.

Despite giving up an 8-1 lead, New York starting pitcher David Peterson was unable to make it past the fourth inning.

Dodgers rookie Andy Pages hit two home runs and had four RBIs. Mookie Betts scored for the second consecutive game, helping Los Angeles cut an eight-point deficit to 10-6.

But then relievers Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz got things under control, and the Mets got it under control. Stanek pitched a career-high 21/3 innings for the win, with Diaz pitching no runs and six outs.
