Mexican immigrant detained for firing at Border Patrol in Chicago

A Mexican man was arrested over the weekend in Chicago, suspected of shooting at Border Patrol agents during a raid. There were also reports of demonstrators hurling bricks at federal authorities, which certainly escalated the situation.

The unidentified man allegedly rode along with agents during their search for undocumented immigrants in the Little Village area, fired multiple gunshots, and then fled the scene in a Jeep.

Meanwhile, a group of protesters attempted to obstruct the operation by throwing bricks and buckets of paint at the vehicles of law enforcement.

Law enforcement quickly initiated a manhunt for the shooter, but, thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The Department of Homeland Security revealed that they had arrested a “criminal illegal alien from Mexico,” who had a history of serious convictions, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and illegal entry.

“This incident is part of a concerning trend of violence and obstruction. We’ve observed a rise in assaults against federal law enforcement recently, which highlights the risks agents encounter daily,” DHS stated.

The agency noted that this individual has been labeled a Laken Riley Violator, and charges for assault against a police officer are forthcoming.

The Laken-Riley Act, enacted in January 2025, enables DHS to detain certain non-U.S. individuals who have prior convictions for crimes like robbery or theft.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem criticized Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who had previously likened ICE operations in Chicago to Nazi-era actions. Noem remarked that such comparisons protect violent illegal immigrants who pose threats to law enforcement.

“This is a matter of law and order, good versus evil, and we will prevail,” she asserted.

In late October, DHS reported an alarming 8,000% rise in death threats against ICE officers, but Noem emphasized that such threats wouldn’t deter their operations.

This news follows a recent incident involving the Latin Kings gang in Chicago, which was accused of placing a $10,000 bounty on the head of Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino. A senior gang member was later arrested related to this threat.
