Mexican Lawmaker Reportedly Attempted to Bring Cash into California, Overlooked $45K

Mexican Lawmaker’s Detention at U.S. Border

Mexican officials are attempting to downplay the recent detention of a lawmaker by U.S. authorities. They’re particularly focused on the seizure of about $45,000 that she allegedly tried to take into California. The politician, Alejandra Ann Hernandez, from Mexico’s ruling Morena party, maintains that it was simply an oversight and that she is currently working to address the situation with U.S. officials.

This incident took place on Monday at a port of entry in the Mexicali-Calexico border region. Ann Hernandez, while attempting to cross into California, was detained by U.S. customs officials. Reports indicate she was carrying a significant amount of undeclared currency—about $45,000—concealed in two different areas of her white GMC Yukon. After several hours of questioning, she was released but was prohibited from entering California. Following this, her tourist visa was reportedly revoked. Bringing more than $10,000 in undeclared cash into or out of the United States is illegal.

Upon her release, Hernandez publicly stated that it was her mistake for leaving the money at home before traveling to California. She explained that the funds were from her and her husband’s savings and the sale of her car, which they intended to use for purchasing another vehicle. Contrary to some reports, she insisted that her visa had not been cancelled. U.S. authorities have been somewhat secretive about revealing the specifics of visa revocations for Mexican officials linked to corruption cases, with only a few clear instances known.

As noted by various outlets, including Breitbart Texas, several Mexican politicians have faced visa revocations since the Trump administration came into power. Many of these individuals are affiliated with the ruling MORENA party and include governors, mayors, and legislators, often linked to corruption or organized crime. However, there isn’t a clear number of how many politicians have lost their travel documents, largely due to a lack of official statements from the U.S. government. This has led to speculation in Mexico regarding the identities of those impacted.
