Mexican naval tall ship lost engine power before colliding with Brooklyn Bridge

A tall Mexican Navy vessel collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night after apparently losing power just before the incident, according to the NYPD.

The Cuauhtémoc, which had 277 crew members—mostly cadets—was reversing back toward the bridge when it struck one of the bridge’s towering masts around 8:30 PM.

Reports indicate that two sailors were on the mast at the time of the collision. Tragically, two individuals have died, and 17 more sustained injuries, some of which are serious.

Preliminary findings suggest power loss may have contributed to the accident, and the National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating.

Officials noted that the ship was en route out of New York to Iceland when this unfortunate event occurred.
