Immigration Concerns Amid Protests in Los Angeles
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her concerns regarding immigration actions coinciding with the ongoing excitement surrounding the Dominican Republic’s Gold Cup soccer match, held at Sofi Stadium. Many Mexican fans are attending, and Sheinbaum highlighted her disapproval of any immigration enforcement happening during such events.
“I don’t believe a soccer match is the right time for actions by immigration authorities,” she stated during a press conference. She further emphasized Mexico’s commitment to promoting peace.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) mentioned their plans to ensure security at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 by collaborating with local and federal entities. This commitment extends to all major sporting events.
Currently, downtown Los Angeles is under a curfew following significant unrest. The police department reports that around 400 people have been arrested since Saturday, with serious charges including assault on police officers and possession of weapons.
Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security announced a recent operation led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which involved the arrest of several convicted offenders in Los Angeles this week.
As tensions rise, there have been accusations that local leaders, including Governor Newsom, are not prioritizing community safety in their handling of immigration matters, particularly regarding individuals with criminal backgrounds.
This situation continues to unfold as protests and riots develop in response to the ongoing actions by immigration officials.
